Drake Has A DAUGHTER?? Euphoria, 6:16, Family Matters, Meet the Grahams And Everything In Between
It has been a WILD week for the soap opera that is the hip-hop scene in 2024.
On Tuesday, Kendrick Lamar took the world by storm, tweeting a link to a track titled "Euphoria," in which he verbally assaulted Drake, attacking him not only as a father but as a man. While the track's central thesis is that Drake isn't accepted by Black culture, Lamar goes on multiple tangents explaining in no uncertain terms why he just flat-out hates Drake from "the way that you walk" to "the way that you dress." It was so brutal that NPR's Morning Edition ran a lyrical breakdown on air.
Kendrick then ran it back early Friday morning, dropping "6:16 in LA" (a play on Drake's AM/PM series) on Instagram in the same fashion as Drake with his since-deleted "Taylor Made Freestyle." Now things get INTERESTING.
Towards the end of "Euphoria," Kendrick raps "Back to Back I like that record, imma get back to that for the record." According to Complex, Drake's dad's cousin, Teenie Hodges, was a guitarist and songwriter for Al Green and played guitar on Al Green's "What A Wonderful Thing Love Is" which Lamar sampled in "6:16." Al Green and Teddy Pendergrass released a collaborative "Back to Back Hits" record in 1995 and fans are speculating about all possible entendres, as Tupac was born on June 16, Father's Day 2024 lands on June 16, and OJ Simpson's murder trial began June 16. The list goes on and on.
Further, "6:16 in LA" was co-produced and written by Jack Antonoff, the main producer for Taylor Swift. So technically Kendrick's diss actually is Taylor Made. Just some food for thought.
On the track, Lamar paints Drake as a music industry bully whose behavior has led to resentment amongst his closest associates. "Have you ever thought that OVO was working for me" he posits before later on stating for fact that the 6God has multiple people in his camp that are disloyal to him, one in particular who is right next to him (Chubbs, Baka, 40?)
Instead of diving into specifics, Kendrick played on Drake's delicate sensibilities and planted ambiguous seeds of doubt that surely had Drake crippled on the inside. And just in case there was any doubt, the track's cover art is an image of a black leather glove with a Maybach logo and no sequins, seemingly proof that Kendrick has access to the moles in Drake's operation.
Gahhh DAMN. This is rap's version of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier's Fight of the Century. We are entering the later rounds and shit is getting LETHAL.
Late Friday night Drake took things personal with “Family Matters,” an almost 8-minute track that saw Drizzy eviscerate Kendrick's relationship with his fiance, Whitney Alford. “Say you hate the girls I fuck but what you really mean / I been with Black and white and everything in between / You the Black messiah wifing up a mixed queen / And hit vanilla cream to help out with your self-esteem. He also asserts that one of Kendrick's children isn't even his, instead the biological son of Dave Free, a longtime creative partner of Lamar. And it doesn't stop there.
Drake also insinuates that Kendrick was responsible for Tupac's estate threatening to sue him for an unauthorized AI sample on Taylor Made Freestyle. “A cease and desist is for hoes / Can’t listen to lies that come out of your mouth / You called the Tupac estate and begged them to sue me and take that shit down,” he says. He finishes on a dark note referring to their children and alluding that Lamar and Alford never got married because Lamar physically abused her. Holy FUCK.
Kendrick must have had this on standby because within minutes, he dropped an even more grueling track in “Meet the Grahams,” where each verse is addressed directly at someone in Drake’s family. This includes his son Adonis, mother Sandra, father Dennis, and OH YEAH A DAUGHTER that Drake has never publically addressed. I actually don't know what to believe anymore.
Everybody remembers in 2018 when Pusha T exposed Drake for having a son he had never publically acknowledged. If this turns out to be true and Drake got Pusha Tea'd TWICE I'd say this battle is the end of Drake's career. OVO Chubbs and OVO Niko have been doing damage control, calling cap in IG comments but tbh I don't even think it matters. Kendrick got SO personal that Pac himself is surely shaking in his grave.
I'll add more to this post later but it's 5:30 am and I need at least 4 hours of sleep to operate so that's all for now. Holy hooters this beef just got deep.
