Rich Homie Quan Had Too Many Bangers To Go Out This Quietly
“Turn that shitty rap music off you’re hurting my ears.”
That was my dad’s response to my Rich Homie Quan tribute Friday morning. And by tribute of course I mean walking down the stairs blasting “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” while hitting the quan with as much swagger as a white kid from the burbs possibly can. I mean c'mon this was the first song I bought on iTunes after all (with the exception of the Kidz Bop version of “I Love It” by Icona Pop and Charli XCX but we don’t talk about that).
Normally I wouldn’t take offense to a comment like this since apart from Travis Scott, Drake, and Post Malone (is he even a rapper anymore), my dad refuses to believe any other artist in the industry has a smidgen of talent compared to the classic rock bands he grew up on, but I digress.
One thing about me is I am a huge hip-hop nerd, so when my mom bought me Spotify Premium for my birthday in 2014, I quickly fell down the rabbit hole exploring artists from Atlanta.
Memory is a weird thing because 95% of the time I'll have the memory of Dory from Nemo but then I'll remember the most random events like yelling at my neighbor to stop catapulting me on the trampoline so I could look up what song just came on and add it to my playlist (it was "Lifestyle" by Rich Gang). Safe to say I was hooked ever since.
I debated writing a blog about Quan's rapid ascent and Young Thug's role in his falling off, but frankly, that would bore the shit out of you. Instead here's all the bangers the East Atlanta rapper has stamped his imprint on:
Lifestyle - RIAA Certified Platinum
Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh) - 3x RIAA Certified Platinum
Mamacita - RIAA Certified Platinum
$ave Dat Money - 2x RIAA Certified Platinum
My N*gga - 5x RIAA Certified Platinum
Ride Out - Certified Gold
Type of Way - Certified Gold
If you made it this far you know we lost a real one. Bro had a generational run that gave Fetty Wap a run for his money. Although the autopsy hasn't been disclosed, close family reports that he OD'ed off a bad pill at just 33 years old. Let this be a sign to anyone struggling with mental health to reach out and get help. Abusing pills is never the answer. Rip Rich Homie Quan
